Agriculture | ABE Chili Pepper Cultivation |
A.M. Ventures launched its agricultural enterprise in Baolala in rural Malindi through its agricultural subsidiary, A.M. Kilimo. A.M. Ventures aims to contribute to Kenya’s national food security, especially by utilizing modern irrigation methods in marginal lands. The company’s agricultural project is located near the planned Kenyan government’s mega irrigation scheme of Galana-Kulalu that seeks to put one million acres of land under irrigation agriculture. |
A.M. Ventures intends to cultivate in its scheme staple crops such as maize, beans, potatoes and vegetables, among others, but the company launched its agricultural project with cultivation of African bird’s eye chili peppers (ABE). Botanically known as Capsicum frutescens and in Kiswahili as kachachawa, ABE is in great demand worldwide due to its variety of uses. It is most commonly used as a spice, especially in Asian countries. However, it is also used in food preparation and pharmaceuticals. |

In addition, it is used in the manufacture of tear gas and pepper spray. Pepper spray is very popular worldwide as a self-defense product. A.M. Ventures started harvesting its ABE crop last June and intends to produce the crop on large scale for both the local and international markets.
The production of ABE is very labor-intensive, especially at the picking stage. Also, because A.M. Ventures will use irrigation to produce the crop, the company expects to generate 1,500-2,000 jobs from the cultivation of ABE alone. The company has strategically located its agricultural project to take advantage of the planned Malindi International Airport for export to the world market when the Airport starts operations.
Dr. Elizabeth Mukewa, a manager with A.M. Ventures, said that A.M. Ventures is going to play a central role in the economic development of rural Malindi.
“Its agricultural project makes A.M. Ventures an important partner in development in Kilifi County in general and rural Malindi in particular,” she added. |
